I Almost Forgot…

I can’t believe I nearly forgot about this, but if you’re a MacAddict magazine subscriber (or regularly buy it from the newsstand), the August issue will feature the standard “50 Bugs of OS X” they do whenever a major OS X rev is released.

Yours truly was lucky enough to have contributed seven of the 50 (or so) bugs that’ll be listed. This marks a big moment, as this is my very first magazine editorial type contribution. The RCT (Really Cool Thing) about it is, I’m actually getting paid for the gig. That’s right — cold, hard cash for stuff that’s rattling around in my skull.

How scary is that?

Site Will Be Down Saturday

For all (2) of you who stop in on a regular basis, this is a little note to let you know the server will be going offline for (at least) part of this Saturday while I physically move it from one house to the other. If all goes as I hope it will, everything should be back in place by late afternoon.

I’d forgotten just how much I hate moving, and in the 5 years we’ve been where we’re at, we’ve amassed at least twice as much stuff as when we moved in. Good grief! I’ve already made 3 trips to Goodwill, and will have to make at least one more before we’re done. Last night, I came across boxes hidden in the rafters of the garage that hadn’t been opened since the last place we were in. It was full of old Mac books about OS 8.5 and the like. Oh, the memories…

"Cast" in the Leading Role

Thankfully, the swelling has gone down enough in the elbow to let my doctor finally cast my arm. It goes from mid-bicep down to the wrist. This is a good thing in that I get to have my left hand back, in a limited fashion. I missed my left hand terribly while it was away.

I still can’t write too well, but the hand is in the perfect position to allow me to type. That’s all that matters, really — being able to type. I didn’t realize just how much I relied on being able to keyboard until the past two weeks.

So, four weeks of lugging around a big chunk of fiberglass at my side, then a week or two of physical therapy. That puts me back in full action around the beginning of August. I can handle that. It’s just about that time when summer starts getting good in HB. Heck, I may even be able to get some surfing in this season too.

Weblog Back in Place

You can’t keep a good man down — even if he only has one arm. As you can see, the blog is once again up, which means I finally ported my MovableType template over to WordPress.

It was a far simpler task than I thought it would be, so after an afternoon of right handed typing (which I’m getting pretty good at) here you go; and better than before I might add.

Thanks to all that have wished me a speedy recovery.

Out of Commission

As (my dumb) luck would have it, I managed to break my left elbow in a skateboard accident on the final day of my vacation last week. Due to this little inconvenience, weblog entries (not to mention Yasu development) will be very minimal for the next couple of months.

It was just about this time last year when I managed to break my left index finger while surfing — now it’s my whole arm. It doesn’t help matters that I’m a lefty, either. I’m willing to bet that I’ll become a righty by the time my cast comes off, which may be a good thing, since I tend to be a bit more left-brained anyway.

It’s a trip trying to do everything you take for granted with your passive hand. Simply shaving in the morning can be a dangerous process!

Here's Some Keynote Speculation

There’s lots of talk about Steve announcing that Apple will be moving the entire Mac line over to Intel microprocessors during the next couple of years at the Keynote this morning. What if we’ve got it all wrong?

Keep in mind, this is purely speculation, fueled by a restless nights sleep and bad hotel coffee. But what if Apple has developed a version of OS X that will actually run on an X86 chip in conjunction with the PPC line? There have long been rumors of a group in Apple that were committed wholly to just that task. What if they’ve been successful? Kind of an “OS X LE” if you will. And rather than the “Classic” environment like we Mac users have, they’ve been able to do some kind of Windows emulation? I know – that’d be Redmond legal h-e double toothpicks…

Wouldn’t that be something, though? Instead of getting Win users to buy new hardware, all they have to do is buy a new OS and try it out. Heck, Windows users have to reinstall their OS every few months anyway, right? Naturally, it’s an LE version, so the cost is reduced. Say… $69. Now the interest of more Wintel users has been piqued. They’ve heard just how bullet proof OS X is, and will be able to see for themselves without having to layout cash for new hardware. Then there’s the whole licensing thing. If it caught on, well who knows. Bye-bye, Redmond.

Naturally, all of this would have ramifications on the hardware side of things for Apple. But since the cash is all in licensing, and being in business is all about making cash, it’s not totally improbable.

Like I said, this was just a mental tangent. It was fun for the moment. If any of it turns out to be right, I’ll have to give up my day job and join the circus as a fortune teller. “Jimbo, the Magnificent” – I can see it now…

Your lucky numbers for the day are: 3, 8, 12, 24 and 31. The mega number is 42.
