That’s a Wrap

05.20.06 | Site | No Comments | Permalink

Well, the MacGathering is finally behind me, as are several other projects. I’m glad to see the commitments I’ve agreed to fulfilled. But through all of it, I’ve been thinking hard about taking a break from my online presence in order to recharge the batteries and get a fresh perspective on life and family. In a nutshell, I’m just plain burned out.

So with that, it’s time to step back from the show for a spell and spend some time with the wife and kids, and learn to live life away from the keyboard. I’ve been so up against the wall for so long now, with one commitment after another looming over my head, I’ve nearly forgotten that life is a gift which shouldn’t be squandered on fruitless pursuits. I think the passing of my father-in-law last month finally drove the point home.

Don’t worry. I’m not going away for good. Just look at it as I’m going on summer hiatus. I’ll be back before you know it, tanned, recharged, sporting a whole new look, and ready to take on the world again.

Huntington Beach given rights to title “Surf City USA”

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office awarded Huntington Beach three official registration numbers that permit it to use the designation “Surf City USA” in ads, on beach bags, hats and other beachwear, the city Conference and Visitor’s Bureau announced Friday.

Thank goodness, the long drawn out battle has finally been settled, with HB coming out on top. Santa Cruz is a great surf spot, and they have a wonderful surf museum. But how could anybody possibly argue that a cold water, central-coast break could be called “Surf City USA?” Nope, it had to be a SoCal spot where the sand is warm, the sun shines, and the surf history is rich.

Apple Store - Broomfield, CO

New Apple Store - Broomfield, CO

Well now! This is news! Not that it’s too big a deal to anyone outside of the North Denver area and myself, but I was overly jazzed to learn today that Apple is opening a new store this weekend pretty much smack dab in the middle of the two places I lived growing up as a kid! Just seeing the town name, Broomfield, brought back a ton of memories of the kids I grew up with, and the 700 acre wheat farm in Arvada where I lived for several years.

The Farm

From what I can remember, Broomfield and Arvada were small towns, with vast open areas. I especially remember the panorama to the west of the Rocky Mountains rising to meet the sky. I remember trudging down the long drive way (aka - dirt road) to the farm house in the middle of a raging blizzard with my mother and sister, having to leave the car on the side of the road for fear that we’d not be able to drive up the hill to get out the next day.

I remember my first dog, Sport, who just showed up one sunny day in the middle of winter and never left. He was my playmate on the farm, always going where I went - keeping me out of trouble. When I’d get dropped off at home by the school bus, he’d come running as fast as he could up the quarter mile drive way (dirt road) to greet me. He was my best friend.

I remember sneaking into the drive-in on North Perry St during the summer after we’d moved from the farm house into Broomfield. I remember the kids I grew up with there, and the friends I had. I often wonder where all of them wound up and what their lives turned out to be.

Wow. It’s funny what remembering a place can do. I have a longing to return, just to see what it’s all like now. I’m sure it’s completely different. If you’re local to the area and come across this post, please get in touch with me. I’d like to know if the farm house still stands, and what the area is like now.

Not Quite a Full Reboot

Well, it’s not quite a full css reboot, so let’s just call it a warm restart instead, shall we? I was unaware of the annual css reboot event that happens May 1st until just a few days ago. Don’t ask me where I’ve been — I just wasn’t paying attention to it, since css wasn’t my “thing” until just recently.

Anyway. I’ve taken this cool original Wordpress theme, “Drunkey Love,” and modded the heck out of it to make my own. I’ve changed so much style code that I could rename the theme as something different, giving a “thanks for the inspiration” nod to Kevin. But, no — I think I’ll leave the name alone, for now at least.

So, happy css reboot day. Hope you dig the new digs. I’d better get going on the new design for next year, just so I’m ready for it.
