WordPress 2.0.4 Released
Just a quick note to let all you WP users know that WordPress has been updated to v2.0.4, which includes several security fixes, and over 50 bug fixes. Go download it and install. Easy as pie to do.
Remember the Nerds
Remember – today is “SysAdmin Appreciation Day” – so let’s not forget those unsung heroes (who you made fun of in high school) that keep the network, servers, printers and workstations running so you can get your work (or fun) done. It’s a dirty (and thankless) job, but someone’s gotta do it.
We Don't Need No Stinkin' Ads…
That’s it. I can’t stand it anymore. I’ve gotten rid of them — the ads that is. I just couldn’t bear to look at them any longer. They flat out made my site look too crappy and it was driving me nuts. So I ditched the whole idea of making “free” money — and I feel a whole lot better for doing it.
Just thought I’d get that off my chest…
No Such Thing as an Easy Buck
I’ve given site-wide ads a trial run, trying to generate some revenue using various means, but little has come of it. It would seem either my site is just not specific enough, or my content is too dull/boring for people to be interested in perusing pages and clicking ads. Even still, I thought I’d share the low-down on the results for any who are interested or curious.
Another Fresh New Look
I’ve slapped yet another a new theme together for my site (as you can see). This one is for my own consumption (sorry – it’s not going public), but I will be basing my upcoming contest entry on the structure of it. For the most part, it’s done. I’ve just got to tweak some things for the Flickr RSS plug-in, but otherwise, it’s golden as they say.
Just a quick little aside; I purchased Mint a couple of days ago more on a whim than anything else. I liked the way it looked and thought it’d be a nice little addition to how I keep track of my stats. What I didn’t expect was, with a little extra Pepper added, the package was able to replace ALL methods of how I was watching downloads, Feedburner, searches, referrers; Everything! If you run a site of your own and aren’t really happy with how hard you have to work to keep track of your numbers, you really should give Mint a look-see. You’ll be impressed I guarantee.
WordPress Themes Widgetized
Both of my WordPress themes, Ala Moana and Plane Jane, are now officially widgetized — bringing them to version 2.5.
It was so darn simple to do, I’d swear I missed a step or five somewhere along the way. But, according to my tests, they look pretty good and do what they’re supposed to do. You can download your favorite updated theme file directly from here:

WordPress Theme Competition
I found my way over to theundersigned.net yesterday by following a series of links starting from Photo Matt and was stoked to learn that Thomas is in the planning stages of kicking off a WordPress theme contest.
This one promises to be better than those that have come in the past. Not only will there be an actual cash prize, but you have to design a brand spankin’ NEW theme from scratch to enter. There will be absolutely no previously released, or k2 (et al) modified themes allowed. I think that’s a totally great idea.
You know I’ve already started sketching my next “killer” theme to enter, so keep an eye out for more news on this contest in the future.
Ala Moana Theme Updated to v2
Since Friday night is my "tick night" as my wife puts it (the keys of the iBook "tick" well into the night, hence the name…), I put aside some time to update my WordPress Ala Moana theme to v2. It incorporates all the similar changes that the recent Plane Jane update got, plus a couple other tweaks. You can go grab the new versions here if you like.
I’ve already started widgetizing both of the themes, so look for new releases that include that functionality soon.
Plane Jane Theme Updated to v2
Just a quick note to say that I updated my Plane Jane WordPress Theme to version 2 over the weekend.
Notable changes are a bug fix in the comment.php file that would break the DOM if there were comments to a post and the comments got closed later. I also cleaned up some of the CSS, tidied up other theme files, and changed the doctype from XHTML 1.1 to XHTML 1.0 Transitional. The doctype change makes the theme validate correctly for both CSS and HTML (since that’s VERY important now-a-days).
Next up will be making similar changes to Ala Moana, and then producing a 3rd theme (which promises to be the best yet) in the next week or two.
