The Top of the Charts

Every once in a while I’ll do a search for myself on Google (yes, it’s an ego thing) to see where my name stands in the rankings. Imagine my surprise joy to find that I am was the number one listing of “Jim Mitchell” today. I guess you could say that makes me the king of Jim Mitchell’s in all the Internets…

Of course, it’s not by mere chance that this has suddenly happened. It’s due mainly to the fact that I’ve implemented several SEO1 techniques based on those shared by Chris Pearson over at pearsonsonified.com. Thanks for the awesome tips Chris!

  1. SEO = Search Engine Optimization. There’s a whole genre of blogdom that specifically targets this topic, with a wealth of information on how to better your rankings without spamming the world to high hell. Yes, it takes a little bit of work, but at least you earn your page rank. ↩

    Jim,

    I’ve got a question for ya…

    Right now, I construct all of my footnotes manually, and it’s basically a complete pain.

    Are you using a plugin to auto-generate yours, or are you hand-coding them as well?

    Chris,

    I’m using the "Footnotes 0.9.1" plug-in for WP, which can be found at <http://www.elvery.net/drzax/2006/02/10/footnotes-0-9-plugin-for-wordpress-2-0-x/>

    It definitely makes footnoting much easier. Simply wrap the footnote text in double parentheses, and the plug-in does the rest.

    Being ranked well for your name is the easy part.

    Being ranked well for your chosen subject is a different matter.

    That’s when SEO starts to come into its own…
