Always Do Your Own Usability Tests

I learned a valuable lesson the hard way today. The lesson being, always test your WordPress site after you activate or deactivate a plugin.

It turns out using the WordPress Multibox Plugin on my site was locking visitors out from being able to download zip compressed files if that download link used an image for the link. It’s been going on for at least 2 or 3 weeks. I’m baffled as to why it took that long to hear from anyone.

The cause was that the image, which is a .gif, was listed as one of the image types the plugin should apply to. Since I probably won’t use a .gif for anything I’d want the Multibox Plugin to act on, I removed it from the list of file extensions. Problem solved easily.

So, the moral of the story is test, test again and then test some more when making any kind of change to your site.

The Official Cache Out X Announcement

I’m very pleased and excited to be able to finally announce publicly that development of Cache Out X has been taken over by Christopher Thompson of TriLateral Systems.

Christopher has already hit the ground running with a new public beta which fixes some outstanding Tiger and Leopard related issues in the software. In addition to that, he’s taken over full hosting of all released versions for OS X versions 10.2 through 10.4 and beyond. You can consider him the goto guy for all things Cache Out X now.

As part of the hand off, Christopher was kind enough to outline his road map for COX over the next few months. I can honestly say that both Tom Neveu of NoName Scriptware (Cache Out X’s original papa) and I are excited to see what he has in store for the application.

So with this official passing of the torch, I’d like to extend a huge thanks to Christopher for being the guy to step in and keep the dev fire burning, to Tom Neveu for allowing me to take over COX to begin with, and to all the users who’ve been so supportive along the way.

Join me in wishing Christopher all the best as he breathes new life into Cache Out X.

We're Back Online…

Well, it appears we’re back online after being “suspended” for nearly a day. For those wondering, the problem wasn’t with my site. Instead it had something to do with the company who hosts me, which is a hosting reseller — as in they get their hosting from someone else further up the ladder and charge me a little bit more than what they’re charged in order to make some cash.

I have no idea what their problem was, but I think I might need to start looking for a new solution. I’ve yet to hear from anyone after sending support emails and leaving voicemails. That kind of customer service worries me. It’s almost the same thing that happened when my previous host decided to call it quits all of a sudden.

Thanks for bearing with me through this unexpected surprise. More info to follow if there’s anything worth reporting.

Site Issues

If you’ve tried to post a comment, or even browse the site lately, you may have noticed that things have been a bit on the flakey side — with errors 404 & 500 getting thrown left and right.

It seems as though my host may have started throttling certain aspects of my account (PHP, which WordPress runs in) for some unknown reason. I’m going to try to address this with them today to see if we can do something about it.

My apologies for the unreliability over the past couple weeks.
