Thoughts

Quick notes, scattered ideas, and candid updates from whatever’s on my mind.

I had the strangest dream last night… The frames of the glasses I usually wear suddenly became brittle and just crumbled in my hands. I couldn’t see anything after and was trying to figure out how to fix them. Could there be some kind of symbolism in it? I have no idea what it could be if there is.

Hmm… iPadOS 26 with a Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse makes for a decent portable setup. This post published with that setup and it does not suck.

I am down to just three flagged action item emails in my inbox at the day job. I should be able to knock them all out this afternoon. I’ve also lined up transition meetings with the relevant teams for today. This should make the next two weeks a light load.

The date is set for surgery… June 30th. This gives me just enough time to complete the Micro.blog June photo challenge.

I’m living dangerously today and giving iPadOS 26 developer beta a try on my iPad since I barely use it. 🤞🏻

I’m waiting to tell my team members what’s about to happen until I have firm dates from the surgeon tomorrow. I’m sure they’re totally baffled by the fact I’m suddenly turning everything over to them the last few days. I should have been doing this a year or more ago… 🤣

Something I’m struggling with… After being the problem solver and fixer of things for my family, I now have to take a back seat while others handle what I once did in order to protect my health. It’s incredible how much of a man’s self-worth and esteem is tied up in what he’s able to do…and not do.

I was once rabid for Apple Keynotes of any kind. Not anymore. Eventually, features will be what they will be, love them or hate them. Workflows will adjust one way or another, and we’ll move on. Apple no longer innovates enough to excite me. I do still prefer the platform over alternatives though.

Given the recent turn of events, I’ve decided to accelerate killing off the single-user Mastodon instance I’ve been running apart from Micro.blog and federate from here. I feel good about it. It’s one less thing to worry about right now.

Really bad news from my cardiologist today. Five significant cardiac stenoses, which means open heart quintuple quadruple bypass surgery very soon. I’m in shock and it hasn’t sunk in yet. This is warning that it’s going to play out through my blog, so forgive me in advance and unfollow if you’d prefer to.

A much deserved — yet delayed — shout out to @Mtt (and by extension @sod) for proactively reaching out about a category related issue in mnml, which is now fixed. It’s collaboration like this that makes Micro.blog awesome.

I’m reconsidering my online presence, yet again. I hopped back on Bluesky not too long ago, and definitely think I don’t need it. I’m also debating the ROI of a Mastodon presence apart from Micro.blog. I’m not sure spending $72 a year is worth what I’m getting from it. 🤔

My new Logitech MX Master 3S arrived today. It’s more of a handful than what I’m used to, and it’s a little heavier, but I can see why people rave about it. I’m liking it so far.

A small mnml update on the way (v2.5.5) that adds Chinese (Traditional) localization – props to @bobbytung – and tweaks a couple styles that you won’t even notice.

Thanks to @manton, I’ve been able to lay claim to the much coveted short Micro.blog username of just @jim. So if you’ve known me by @jimmitchell, I’m even cooler than I was before. 😁

We’re about to go and try to pick up the RV for the second time. I’m really hoping for all the things to be fixed this time.🤞🏻

Well damn… Not very good news from the cardiologist today. Significant blockages and calcification found. The one good bit of news in it is we’ve caught it in time to do something about it. Paying the tax on all those cheeseburgers, I guess.

The feeling when you see the number of tasks in your task manager and realize you’ve been kicking too many tasks down the road lately. I’ve got a lot on my plate today for sure.

After receiving some glowing recommendations for the Logitech MX Master 3S For Mac online and getting a comprehensive review by email (thank you, @luxury_format), I dropped the cash for one. I’m hoping it lives up to the hype, y’all…

Along with duct tape and Velcro, I think one of man’s greatest inventions has to be the zip tie.

My new Keychron keyboard arrived today. After just 10 minutes of use, I’m 100% a mechanical keyboard convert… Now I need a good mouse to pair it with. Any recommendations? I’ve been using an Apple Magic Mouse forever.

And finally, all six sets of Phosphor Icons for Micro.blog have been made available as plugins. That’s it. I’m done flooding your timeline for the day, maybe…

It’s been a minute, so for the new folks… Here’s the semi-irregular reminder that a Micro.blog t-shirt is available for purchase here.

I’m working on a series of Micro.blog plugins to add the different Phosphor Icon Sets to your Micro.blog site. The first plugin for the “Regular” set is available now. More sets coming soon. A post how to use the icons will come in a few days.

I think I’ve found just about the most perfect Lofi Jazz station on Apple Music there ever was…

It can be frustrating how quickly the best laid task management plans can go awry because a seemingly simple little thing turns into a big gnarly thing. Today is shot. Officially moving all scheduled tasks to tomorrow…

Trying something different… I’m going to set my personal Mastodon instance aside for a bit and just use Micro.blog with its Fediverse features over the next few weeks to see if I like it better. If you saw me follow you from my dot-org domain, it’s legit.

I finally found the cable to my Garmin Instinct watch. It’s been so long, I’ve forgotten how to operate the darned thing. I hope the battery isn’t toast by sitting uncharged for so long…

I had an English Literature teacher my senior year of high school named King Wisdom (no joke!) who’s class you could pass by bringing him Rolos (also, no joke). Personally, I did not bring him Rolos, but I do think of what a character he was whenever I partake of them myself.

Auto-generated description: Two individually wrapped Rolo creamy caramel chocolate candies are placed on a light-colored surface.

Thankfully, we’ve recovered from my hasty settings change day before yesterday.

Every now and then I forget my own rule to the rest of the team: Test in a sandbox, test it again as a user, then test once more as a different user before promoting it.

I caused myself way too much stress with this one…
