Back to Basics

Centering | Seth’s Blog

The most effective way to change an organization, a company or a relationship is to identify the invisible centering forces and address them.

As I start ramping up my return to work, I’m giving deep thought to how I can better approach the challenges in front of me with a minimum of stress.

A big part of that is going to be centered around asking the right questions in the moment instead of just reacting to them.

In a weird and much appreciated twist, I’m starting to get checks BACK from my health insurance for co-pays made thanks to hitting my max out-of-pocket for the year. I’ll take it! πŸŽ‰

Rocking a new theme on the blog based on mnml. I think I’m going to keep this one to myself for a while…

I reactivated my @hemisphericviews subscription this morning, this time as a global supporter. You should support them too if you don’t already. @canion, @jason and @martinfeld are doing the people’s work. I’ve held off listening to any episodes until now in fear of laughing too hard.

It turns out the longer walk route is not quite as long as I thought it was. I need to add another quarter mile to hit or exceed my target. Easy enough…

Starting a reread of David Allen’s Getting Things Done with the intention of tightening up my task management when I return to work. I always catch a new idea when I read it.

πŸ“· After three months, it’s finally beer day!

First up, a 33 Summers West Coast IPA at HB Brewing Company, downtown HB.

A frosty pint of golden beer sits on a polished wooden bar.

And then a Neon Rainbows Hazy IPA – also at HB Brewing Company.

A frothy glass of beer sits on a wooden bar counter.

Drats… I went for a longer and brisker walk than usual today, hoping to fully close a smart watch ring. Sadly, I somehow managed to pause the workout midway through, so no ring for me. That’s okay. I’ll make it up when we walk downtown for a beer and back. I know I got the work in…

The orientation for cardiac rehab went smoothly this morning. I’m already way beyond what most patients start at. The schedule is three times a week for the next six – though the program is really 12 weeks long. I should be in much better shape than I was pre-op by the time I head back to work. πŸ’ͺ🏻

It’s been a while since I mentioned it, so…

There are Micro.blog t-shirts available on Cotton Bureau if it’s something you’d like to get in on.

Get yours today!

Today’s special caffeine treat… A Flat White from IKYKY! Coffee Lab in Pacific City, downtown Huntington Beach.

A latte in a paper cup features beautiful flower-shaped latte art on a white table.

A mnml teaser… How about a feature to display related posts based on category? Yeah? I thought so. Coming soon…

An example screenshot of what related posts for the Micro.blog mnml theme might look like.

A new mnml theme update to v2.6.2 has been released that adds the new categories page “intro text” as well as refactoring some css styles. The update from your plugin page should be available soon, if it’s not already. Enjoy!

For fun, I decided to give GitHub CoPilot a chance to optimize some of mnml’s CSS this morning. It caught some things that needed fixing, but the code changes I let it make for me were not valid. I had revert, review its recommendations, and then manually change on my own.

Six weeks post-op today. That means real coffee and beer are back on the list of things allowed – but in moderation. This morning’s coffee was the best I think I’ve ever had. Tomorrow morning, we plan to walk to a local coffee shop for a REAL pour over. That should be heaven.

So sad to learn today that the family ranch I spent many childhood years on was lost to the Canyon Fire in Castaic, CA last week. The houses were built nearly 100 years ago, if not more. πŸ˜”

I finally took the maintenance exams for my industry certifications today that I’ve been putting off for six months. Yep… Feeling accomplished today.

I guess I should see it as a good sign that I’m beginning to miss work, right?

A minor mnml (2.6.1) update has been released in order to make the photos page on mobile devices look a bit better.

Back in the Saddle

So… In case you were wondering, yes, I’m still here, alive and kicking. 😁

If you weren’t aware, I’ve been recuperating from a quadruple CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting for those not in the “club”). I’m happy to report my cardiologist has given me a clean bill of health. Apart from a little leg swelling and the occasional pain in my sternum, I feel great and am back to pre-surgery activities.

If there were one piece of advice I think might help someone else going through what I went through, it would have to be that attitude makes all the difference.

Even on my worst days, I forced myself to maintain a positive outlook. It could have been easy to get depressed sitting around doing nothing – and I almost did a couple of times. But I kicked my own ass out of it, reminding myself that taking it easy to recover was important and to learn from the process.

Anyway… Enough of that. I went through it and came out aces on the other side. I’m grateful for each day’s dawn. I see things differently now and plan to write a post on that before long.

What I really wanted to share was that I felt good enough today to create that mnml archives by year plugin I promised a little bit ago. If you have a long page of archives, this could help you. Install it from the Micro.blog plugins directory.

I also took some time to make some tweaks to the mnml theme itself. Taking inspiration from @manton’s Photos with months plugin, I updated mnml to simply default to grouping images by month/year for both the grid and masonry layouts. It looks pretty awesome if I do say so myself. The new version is 2.6.0 and you should be able to update soon if not already.

That’s it. Time for this guy to get out and enjoy the day. My wife and I are going to visit Seal Beach this afternoon. Maybe I’ll snap some pics from our outing.
